Sam Troemel, MS. LMFT. CST
Licensed in Wisconsin and Illinois
AASECT Certified Sex Therapist
Sam (She/They) is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist (CST) with offices in both Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is licensed in both Wisconsin and Illinois. Her professional career has been inspired by her own personal identities, understanding of the nuances in relationships and commitment to their collective community. They provide therapy to couples, relationships and to individuals, both in-person or virtually. They specialize in working within the LGBTQ+ community, folks in non-traditional relationships (poly or ethical non-monogamy), couples exploring mismatched desire, and folks who are ready to break patterns and communicate in a fresh, novel way.
The practice is named after the Anthurium plant, which commonly represents love, passion and even long-lasting relationships thanks to its open, heart-shaped leaves and resilient blooms. Anthuriums also represent positive energy, perseverance, and the ability to clear the air. As you come to therapy, each of you have learned to be resilient and adapt. Now, in our space together, we can be open, honest, and direct with each other to create the safe space you need to clear your path forward and foster growth and connection.
In the therapy space there is no judgement. It is a safe space to explore your past and present, your patterns of communication and behavior, and what you want for your future. Together we will process and gain insight to better understand your experiences, your relationships, and the systems that have and still impact you. Collaboratively, we will create a path forward, developing skills to communicate and both respectfully and productively engage in conflict. You’ll learn to set and respect boundaries. As you learn about yourself and your relationship you’ll challenge old patterns that no longer serve you or your relationship. You will develop new tools to engage differently with yourself and others in a way that aligns with your desires and values.
You are the expert of your lives. Sam will help you gain insight, challenge you, and support you through the process.
Techniques:
My approach is rooted in systemic therapy, meaning I look at all aspects of your life including family patterns, systems of oppression, prior romantic and intimate relationships, generational trauma, childhood experiences, and more. I use a blend of evidence-based approaches (Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy) and Sex Therapy rooted in Humanistic and Systems Therapy. My clients often begin to experience a significant shift within the first few sessions purely through gaining insight.
